Face lift (rhytidectomy)

Aging, the effects of gravity, exposure to the sun, and the stresses of daily life impact our appearance. Deep creases form between the nose and mouth, the jawline grows slack and jowly, and folds and fat deposits appear around the neck.

Once the loose skin, fat and muscle have been tightened, other procedures such as a laser resurfacing and microdermabrasion can improve the quality of the skin.

before and after photos - before before and after photos - after Face lifts are individualized procedures and usually take several hours - or longer if you're having more than one procedure done. The exact placement of incisions and the sequence of events during face lift surgery depend on your facial structure. Usually, incisions begin above the hairline at the temples, extend in a natural line in front of the ear (or just inside the cartilage at the front of the ear), and continue behind the earlobe to the lower scalp. If the neck needs work, a small incision may also be made under the chin. The skin is separated from the fat and muscle below and -- if necessary -- fat may be trimmed or suctioned from around the neck and chin to improve the contour. Underlying muscle and membrane is tightened, the skin is pulled back, and excess removed. Stitches secure the layers of tissue and close the incisions. Following surgery, a small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin behind your ear to drain any blood that might collect there and your head wrapped loosely in bandages to minimize bruising and swelling.

After a Face lift

before and after photos - before before and after photos - after Prepare to pamper yourself for the first week after surgery, being especially solicitous of your face and hair. Your skin will be tender and numb. Everyone heals at a different rate and Dr. Stein will give you more specific guidelines for resuming daily activities. However, plan on avoiding strenuous activity for at least two weeks (walking and mild stretching are fine). You should restrain from alcohol use, steam baths, and saunas for several months. Get plenty of rest and allow yourself to heal comfortably. The first couple of weeks, your features may be distorted from swelling, facial movements may be slightly stiff and some bruising may still persist. By the third week, you'll look and feel much better. Most patients are back at work about ten days to two weeks after surgery.

Face lifting may turn back the clock, but it doesn't stop it. Your face will continue to age with time, and you may want to repeat the procedure one or more times -- perhaps five or ten years in the future. However, the effects of even one face lift are lasting; you'll continue to look younger than if you'd never had a face lift!
